What I Would Want From A Sony Gaming Phone

Sony are well known for their take on video games with their PlayStation being one of the most popular and well-known consoles of its time. Their latest console, the PlayStation 4 Pro, brings 4K gaming and a better processor than their predecessor, the PlayStation 4, to the console gaming world. While many people play video games on their consoles, there are also other ways that people can play their favorite games; on their mobile phone. This trend has become increasingly popular in the mobile gaming world, with many OEM’s already taking to the trend with their own take of a ‘gaming’ phone. So far, we have seen the Razer phone, the Asus ROG phone, and Xioami’s ‘Black Shark’ series, but we are still yet to see one from one of the biggest video game competitors, Sony.

While a few have speculated that a Sony gaming phone is in the works, there hasn’t been any recent leaks of the device. Heck, we don’t even know if it is real yet. Though, I don’t see why Sony couldn’t make this happen, since they obviously know how to make a portable gaming console, though they definitely need to brush up on their mobile device game. In recent months, their flagship phones haven’t exactly been selling well, and have actually seen up to a 20% drop in market share since last year, when the XA2 series Sony phones were released. Who knows, maybe this gaming phone could help save Sony’s mobile division? Anyway, past that, what would we want to see in a Sony gaming phone? Continue on to find out…

No more ‘tall’ phones

This year's flagship Sony devices came with very tall displays, with a 21:9 aspect ratio, which did not look very appealing. It felt a lot like someone had just stretched these phones out somehow without damaging the internal components. I kind of feel like Sony are just running out of new innovative ideas for their devices, making them rather boring. Nevertheless, their gaming phone could not have this same display or aspect ratio, because I’m sure anyone with small hands would be deterred from the device, thinking they may drop it in the process of looking at their notifications. Another thing is to increase the refresh rate of the display to at least 90 Hz; otherwise this thing cannot even be called competition.

Fast Pairing with PS4 remotes

A few flagship devices have a nifty Bluetooth feature called ‘Fast Pair.’ This technology essentially pairs with a Bluetooth device that is close by as soon as it detects it. This allows you to turn on your headphones and put them in your ear without having to worry if they actually connected to your phone or not. This would be a pretty cool feature to have in their gaming phone specifically so you can get right to the games rather than having to spend a good few minutes setting up your keyboard, then your controller, and then making sure everything else is correct, etc.

AAA PlayStation Titles

Sony have many amazing PlayStation exclusive games readily available on any Sony PlayStation console, so why not bring them to their top tier gaming phone? I would be interest ed to see some Vita and PSP games ported over to Android to allow for those games to work on this phone.

The Qualcomm SnapDragon 855 Plus CPU

What many gaming phones from this year have is what many previous gaming phones did not have before, and that is the processor. The latest Asus ROG 2 gaming phone will be the first to feature the Qualcomm SnapDragon 855 Plus CPU, and Asus’ ROG brand is another big competitor in the mobile and desktop gaming space. So, if Sony’s gaming phone were not to feature the same processor, then Sony will not sell at all.

Rear Track Pad

To accommodate the PS Vita titles, Sony should definitely add a rear track pad to the device. It could act as a mouse, a fingerprint scanner, and as the rear touchpad for any of the Vita titles that support it. One example would be the Little Big Planet Vita edition which supports the rear trackpad. Maybe Sony could release an API for game and app developers to utilize the technology in their own apps and games?

PlayStation Branding

A gaming phone from Sony could only ever be branded under the PlayStation monicker, right? The device could offer an exclusive LED version which lights a PlayStation logo on the back and maybe even on the front of the device.

Accessories

It would be absolutely amazing if Sony could bring some exclusive accessories to their gaming phone to allow it to be even more successful. A docking station that can output to a TV or monitor? A USB-C hub to connect wired mice, keyboards, gamepads, and more? A controller optimized for the device? There are so many more possibilities for this gaming phone, it’s unreal.

That pretty much sums up everything I would want from Sony. Of course, some of the suggestions would need certain other factors, like a larger battery, USB-C, custom bluetooth technology. But, this is all within Sony’s reach. It’s just whether or not Sony can afford it, and whether or not they are willing to execute this in a way that will attract customers. We can only hope!
